Maxine Waters Fined $68K After FEC Discovers Hundreds of Campaign Expenses at Monique’s Discount Wig Emporium
LOS ANGELES, CA - Rep. Maxine Waters was fined $68,000 by the Federal Election Commission on Monday after an investigation found that her campaign violated several election rules.
The FEC first noticed irregularities in Waters’ 2024 Q4 campaign finance report, which showed hundreds of expenses at Monique’s Discount Wig Emporium in Inglewood, listed as “beautification” expenses.
A statement released by the FEC on Tuesday said that the regulatory agency didn’t recognize “beautification” as a qualified expense and accused the Waters campaign of using donors’ money for her personal gain.
Waters, however, claims that she didn’t violate any rules and that using campaign funds to purchase wigs is protected by the First Amendment.
“This is nothing but a racist witch hunt,” Waters said at a press conference. “How can I serve my constituents if I don’t have good hair? I can’t! Without these quality handmade hairpieces, I cannot pass bills, I cannot vote, and I cannot fight back against the egregious actions of Donald Trump.”
At press time, the FEC announced they were going to issue additional fines after discovering that she bought acrylic nails for her entire campaign staff, including the few male staffers.
